Player Profiles: 2nd Base - Luis Maza

Player: Luis Maza

2008 Stats: 18-79 (.228), one homerun, four RBIs

2008 Analysis: Maza was very similar to Pablo Ozuna, in both hitting and defense. He had one homerun this year, the first of his career, though that's mostly because he's spent his entire career in the minor leagues and finally got to debut this year. His numbers in AAA were impressive, but he didn't produce nearly as well once he reached the majors.

Defensively, Maza found his way into games at both shortstop and 2nd base, though, for a shortstop, he had a surprisingly weak arm. His throws were slow, and almost didn't seem to make it to 1st. He played 50 more innings at 2nd than at shortstop, but committed two errors at each position. He ended up with a .971 fielding percentage this year.

2009 Analysis: Remember what I said about Pablo Ozuna? He can't really hit, he can't really run, he doesn't really play a great defensive game. Well, Luis Maza does those things even less better than Ozuna. I feel there's no place for him on the team next year.
